Using Monty’s on General Flowers and Garden Plants (Houseplants, too!)

cutflowersPropagation – Garden plants, generally,  can be started in one of three ways, either from seed, from cuttings, or by dividing established plants.

From Seed – Place four (4) drops of Monty’s 4-15-12 in 1 cup (8 ounces) of water. Soak seeds overnight.  Plant normally.

From Cuttings – Place 1 ounce of Monty’s 4-15-12 in one gallon of water.  Ensure that the ends of your cuttings have not browned or hardened off.  If they have make a new cut approximately ¼ inch from each end. Soak cuttings overnight. Plant normally.

Separating, Dividing, and Transplanting Existing Plants – Add 1 ounce of Monty’s 4-15-12 per gallon of water in a container large enough to completely submerge the roots of the plants you wish to transplant. Set aside.  Dig up your plants or remove them from their container and separate into desired size clusters.  Some roots may need to be trimmed, that is okay.  Once separated into groups submerge the roots into your Monty’s 4-15-12 solution while you prepare their new home.

Most plants prefer even moist, well draining soils.  To achieve ideal soil we recommend mixing native soil 50/50 with potting mix or compost then treat the inside of the hole and the newly created soil mix with Monty’s Liquid Carbon soil conditioner.  Prepare the soil conditioner by diluting 2.5 -3 ounces in 1 gallon of water and either spraying the surface of the soil and the mix or by pouring it directly onto the surface of both the hole and the soil mix until it is even moist, but not wet.

Plant your transplants into their new holes, fill each hole with your soil mix and water in with remaining liquid from your ‘root dip’ solution.

In Season – Maintain good over-all condition, growth and vigor by following the proper Monty’s program for your particular plant type.

Flowering – By adding 1 ounce of the proper Monty’s Fertility product for the stage of development per gallon of water in a watering can, you can conveniently fertilize every time you water. If you prefer to water with a garden hose you can dilute your Monty’s product 1:3 with water in the reservoir of a hose end applicator, then set the dial to 2 teaspoons and water normally.  Apply weekly or semi-weekly for optimum results.

During the vegetative stage (while the plant is producing foliage) use Monty’s 8-16-8 for lush growth or Monty’s 4-15-12 for moderate growth.

During the reproductive stage (when the plant is flowering) once buds begin to appear switch to Monty’s 2-15-15 and continue using until flowering stops.

Non-flowering – Once plants begin to emerge or to green-up, begin with weekly or semi-weekly applications of Monty’s 8-16-8.  By adding 1 ounce per gallon of water in a watering can, you can conveniently fertilize every time you water. If you prefer to water with a garden hose you can dilute your Monty’s 8-16-8, 1:3 with water in the reservoir of a hose end applicator, then set the dial to 2 teaspoons and water normally.  Apply to the leaf surface of all plants until they look like they have had a light rain or heavy dew.  Apply weekly or semi-weekly for optimum results. Continue using until fall. For all plants to create stronger stems, to improve cellular function and to regulate pH levels we recommend using Monty’s Calcium Plus (where state label laws allow).  Calcium is beneficial for overall plant development and has been shown effective for controlling pH, metabolizing needed nutrients, and boosting plant’s native defense against attacks from pests and diseases.  Calcium Plus should be diluted at a rate of 2.5 – 3 ounces per gallon for watering can or hand sprayer application.  For application with a hose-end sprayer fill reservoir with Monty’s Calcium Plus and set the dial to 2 tablespoons.  Spray until leaves look like they have had a light rain or heavy dew.  If using the hose-end method, any unused product can be poured back into the bottle for later use.

Fall

Flowering

Annuals – Discard all vegetation to prevent providing a place for insects and disease to   overwinter. Prepare soils for next season by applying Monty’s Liquid Carbon directly to the soil.  If using a hand sprayer, mix 2.5 – 3 ounces of Monty’s Liquid Carbon per gallon  of water.  If using a hose-end sprayer, fill the reservoir with Monty’s Liquid Carbon undiluted.  Set the dial to 2 tablespoons and spray the soil.  Whichever method you use, product should be applied until the soil is evenly moist but not wet.

Perennials – Before dormancy, prune any dead blooms and foliage according to    directions for your particular variety  and remove any ‘trash’ that has collected around the base of the plant as this makes an ideal nesting site for aphids, other pests, fungus, and disease to over-winter. Make one last application of Monty’s   4-15-12 (1 oz per gallon) and Monty’s Liquid Carbon (2.5 – 3 ounces per gallon of water). If you wish to combine these applications and are using a hose-end sprayer fill       the reservoir to 9 ounces with water add three ounces of Monty’s 4-15-12, then fill to the ‘full line’ with Monty’s Liquid Carbon. Set the dial to 2 teaspoons and water plants and soil until the soil is evenly moist but not soggy. Cover the base of the plant to the first stem with mulch to protect the plant from winter weather and to provide for early emergence next spring. If your plants are particularly large or you live in an area with particularly strong winter winds, consider staking the plants for additional support during the winter.

Divide clumps every 2-3 years to avoid overcrowding.

Non-Flowering – Trim back normally for your particular variety then remove any debris that has collected around the base of the plant or in the bed.
