Using Mont's with Fruit Trees

fruittreesTransplants - When transplanting woody ornamentals and trees the method you use will be determined largely by the weight and size of the plants your are using.

For small transplants and bare-root trees -  place the plants in a container full of Monty’s 4-15-12, diluted to 1 oz. per gallon of water.  Dig your holes deep enough to cover the root ball.  Remove your plants from the solution and ‘sucker’ the plant to the first main limb.  Plant and cover with soil.  After all plants have been planted, water in with remaining solution from your ‘root dip’ container.  Repeat as necessary until all of your transplants have been planted.

For larger transplants or for trees with large root balls – The weight of a water-soaked root mass may become too difficult to handle or too heavy to transport the plant safely. In this situation, dig your hole to the needed size (about 1 and ½ times the size of the root ball). Transplanting large plants is very stressful for the plant and care should be taken to provide a well draining, aerated environment for the plant. To achieve this, we recommend mixing native soil 50/50 with potting mix or compost then treat the inside of the hole and the newly created soil mix with Monty’s Liquid Carbon soil conditioner.  Prepare the soil conditioner by diluting 2.5 -3 ounces in 1 gallon of water and either spraying the surface of the soil and the mix or by pouring it directly onto the surface until it is even moist, but not wet. Once you have completed this step, place your transplant in the hole and mix 1 oz of Monty’s  4-15-12 per gallon of water.  Fill the hole to the top with this solution and allow it to absorb into the root ball.  Once the majority of water is gone, fill the hole with your newly created soil mix approximately 6-12 inches above the soil line.  Water-in with any remaining 4-15-12 solution.

Throughout the first year it is critical that you get your plant established before you try to push much additional growth.  For this reason, we recommend you make weekly applications of Monty’s 2-15-15 directly to the foliage of the plant.  You can apply Monty’s 2-15-15 with a hose end sprayer diluted in the reservoir 1:3 with water, then set your dial to 2 teaspoons. You can apply it with a pump sprayer diluted 1 ounce per gallon of water. Or you can use a watering can, again, diluted to 1 ounce per gallon of water.  Apply solution until it looks like your plant has had a light rain or heavy dew. In the fall, make an application of Monty’s Liquid Carbon as indicated above. Beginning in the second year you  may follow directions for established plants.

Established plants - For Flowering Trees and Shrubs – Begin each season once leaves begin to appear by treating the plant with Monty’s 8-16-8 for optimum growth and development.  Apply with a hose end sprayer or a tree-sprayer.  Dilute Monty’s 8-16-8, 1:3 with water and set your dial to 2 teaspoons.  Spray until the plant looks like it has had a light rain or heavy dew.  Repeat as often as needed to produce the desired result, but we recommend applying monthly as a minimum.  These applications can be made at the same time as applications to your lawn (see directions for use on lawns here) if you are not using any herbicide.  For smaller trees dilute Monty’s 8-16-8, 1 to 1.5 ounces per gallon of water, in a pump sprayer if you prefer and apply until the leaves look like they have had a light rain or heavy dew.

To enhance blooms on flowering plants, once buds begin to appear, substitute Monty’s 2-15-15 formula and apply as directed above for Monty’s 8-16-8.  Once blooms leave, resume scheduled spraying with Monty’s 8-6-8 formula.

Winterize with an application of Monty’s Liquid Carbon and Monty’s 4-15-12 as leaves begin to fall on deciduous plants or about 3 weeks ahead of first frost on evergreens.

For fruit and nut bearing trees - Begin each season once leaves begin to appear by treating the plant with Monty’s 8-16-8 for optimum growth and development.  Apply with a hose end sprayer or a tree-sprayer.  Dilute Monty’s 8-16-8, 1:3 with water and set your dial to 2 teaspoons.  Spray until the plant looks like it has had a light rain or heavy dew.  Repeat as often as needed to produce the desired growth, but we recommend applying monthly as a minimum.

To enhance fruit and nut production, once buds begin to appear, substitute Monty’s 2-15-15 formula and apply as directed above for Monty’s 8-16-8.  Apply weekly through harvest, then you may switch back to Monty’s 8-16-8 until leaves fall, as apply to the particular variety you are growing. Because fruit and nut trees require the use of pesticides and fungicides for optimal development you can tank-mix the Monty’s product you are using with any liquid fungicide or pesticide for added convenience. Follow label directions for the product you are using then add the appropriate amount of the Monty’s product timed for that stage of development.  Spray normally. Winterize with an application of Monty’s Liquid Carbon and Monty’s 4-15-12 as leaves begin to fall on deciduous plants or about 3 weeks ahead of first frost on evergreens.

For Shade Trees – Apply Monty’s 8-16-8 bi-weekly to monthly from the beginning of the season until fall. These applications can be made at the same time as applications to your lawn (see directions for use on lawns here) if you are not using any herbicide.

Winterize with an application of Monty’s Liquid Carbon and Monty’s 4-15-12 as leaves begin to fall on deciduous plants or about 3 weeks ahead of first frost on evergreens.

All Trees – Using an extra application of Monty’s immediately following or during any period of known stress can help the plant best withstand these attacks. Following a prolonged drought we recommend using Monty’s 2-15-15 and Monty’s Liquid Carbon for the first three months of the new season to nurture and restore the root system before adding the stress of additional growth that the plant will be forced to support.

For borer attacks: Immediately following any moderate to heavy pruning we recommend an application of Monty’s 8-16-8 to help the plant recover and boost natural defenses.
