Application of Monty’s on Lawns

Seeding –  Begin by preparing your seed-bed normally.  We recommend that you conduct a soil test so that you get a good idea of where your key nutrient levels are and what your pH level is in your lawn. (Contact your local county extension office for more information about conducting a soil test.) After your lawn has been ‘turned over’ we recommend making an application of Monty’s Liquid Carbon about two weeks ahead of planting.  Monty’s Liquid Carbon can be applied with a hose end sprayer (undiluted, with dial set at 2 Tablespoons), with a backpack sprayer, hand sprayer, or sprayer mounted on a lawn tractor or 4-wheeler. (2.5 to 3 ounces per gallon of water or about 64 ounces per acre in 15 gallon of water per acre).  Spray this solution on until the ground is evenly moist but not saturated. This application can be tank-mixed with any herbicide labeled for lawn use. Scatter and cover your seed, then apply Monty’s 2-15-15 formula at a rate of 16 to 24 ounces per acre in 15 gallons of water.  If applying with a small hand sprayer dilute at 1.5 ounces per gallon of water. If applying with a hose end applicator dilute Monty’s 2-15-15, 1:3 with water and set your dial to 2 teaspoons. Wet ground evenly. Once seedlings have emerged, you can begin applying Monty’s 8-16-8 at a rate of 16 ounces per acre in 15 gallons of water with a tank sprayer, 1 ounce per gallon with a hand sprayer, or diluted 1:3 with water with the dial set at 2 teaspoons in a hose end applicator. Apply weekly until lawn is well-established.

On established lawns – Your goals will determine which Monty’s formula will be best suited to your lawn.  If you are looking to increase your growth and development and to thicken your lawn we recommend Monty’s 8-16-8.  (This formula will require frequent mowing as your lawn will grow rapidly).  If you have a well-established yard and are just looking to maintain over-all quality and appearance of your lawn, we recommend using Monty’s 4-15-12. Once you have decided which formula is best suited for you, application is the same for either Monty’s Fertility Product.  If applying with a tank sprayer, add 16-24 ounces of Monty’s in 15 gallons of water spray the blades of grass at least once per month until the look like they have had a light rain or heavy dew.  With a hand sprayer dilute Monty’s Fertility Products at a rate of 1 to 1.5 ounces per gallon of water and mist the blades of grass at least monthly.  If applying with a hose end applicator, dilute the Monty’s formula of your choice 1:3 with water in the reservoir of your sprayer, set the dial to 2 teaspoons and spray the blades of grass until they look like they have had a light rain or heavy dew.

For weed control – All of Monty’s fertility products can be used in conjunction with most herbicides labeled for lawn and garden use.  The ability to ‘tank-mix’ these products gives you the added convenience of weed-n-feed flexibility.  Follow all directions for the herbicide you have selected and dilute according to manufacturer guidelines. Then add the appropriate amount of Monty’s fertility product to your sprayer as indicated above. Spray normally.

Winterizing – Approximately 2-3 weeks ahead of dormancy we recommend applying 64 ounces per acre of Monty’s Liquid Carbon and 16 ounces per acre of Monty’s 2-15-15 formula.  This application will head improve your soil condition throughout the winter and will allow your plants to store energy for the upcoming winter.  The result will be an improved root system, better soil, less ‘winter-kill’ of your landscape and quicker green-up next spring.

A few notes about using Monty’s Fertility Program in your lawn

  • Unlike traditional granular fertilizers, Monty’s is low in salts and therefore cannot burn your lawn.  Feel free to use it as frequently as you want to achieve the results you desire.
  • Monty’s is ‘rain-fast’ with-in 30 minutes of application in most environments.  If it has dried on the leaf, it is in the plant.
  • Monty’s does not require rain to ‘activate’ it, like most granular fertilizers.
  • Monty’s products are safe and made from food-grade materials so there is no risk of harm or injury to pets, children, or the applicator.
  • Continue your spray program even during periods of drought.  Because Monty’s does not require water to activate it, it will still get into your plants and by continually feeding your lawn you will help it best withstand the impact of drought or other forms of stress.
  • If you have an in-ground irrigation system, Monty’s can be used with a siphon or nurse tank, call our office for specific dilution instructions.
